Single older women bring a wealth of life experience, resilience, and practical wisdom that can enrich both their own lives and the communities they become part of.

Having often navigated careers, family responsibilities, financial challenges, and personal change, they tend to possess strong problem-solving skills, emotional intelligence, and a deep understanding of relationships and community.

This experience fosters independence, adaptability, and empathy—qualities that contribute to supportive neighbourhoods and strong social networks. Older women frequently share their knowledge through mentoring, volunteering, and informal community involvement, helping to strengthen local connections and social cohesion.

They are also highly valuable in the workforce, often bringing reliability, strong work ethics, professional experience, and well-developed interpersonal skills that benefit employers and workplaces. Their presence can add stability, perspective, and a sense of care within communities, while also allowing them to continue living purposeful, engaged lives that benefit both themselves and those around them.

Pedigree Home Services – Our Background

Pedigree Home Services & Social Support is a unique social enterprise that offers high-quality cleaning and home maintenance services while also providing valuable employment opportunities and life skills. Founded in 2019 by Helen Gormlie, an ex-foster carer, the business focuses on addressing the needs of vulnerable individuals – both in it’s staffing opportunities and programs. Pedigree Home Services prides itself on its ability to go beyond ordinary cleaning by providing comprehensive services that include house cleaning, garden maintenance, handyman services, furniture setup, and relocation, all while delivering exceptional customer satisfaction.

Our mission is to create transformative experiences for both our clients and employees by providing top-quality cleaning and home maintenance services while offering at-risk individuals the opportunity to learn valuable life and work skills. Pedigree Home Services aims to be a bridge between vulnerable people and supportive housing, particularly focusing on helping homeless individuals and pets to find safe, secure accommodation.

Pedigree Home Services envisions a world where every space is a sanctuary, providing comfort and care to both people and pets. Through our services, we aim to reduce homelessness, especially among pet owners, by providing affordable housing options for homeless individuals and their pets. Additionally, we seek to foster a sense of community and support through our services and employment opportunities.

Older women are now the fastest-growing cohort of people experiencing homelessness and housing stress in Australia. What makes this particularly striking is that most of these women have lived conventional lives — raising families, caring for others — and never anticipated ending up homeless. The crisis is driven by a combination of structural disadvantages that compound over a lifetime. Lower lifetime earnings, interrupted work histories due to caregiving, and limited superannuation can all converge to create serious housing vulnerability in later life. When a relationship breaks down, a tenancy ends, or costs spike, many older women find themselves with few financial buffers and very limited options in an increasingly expensive private rental market.

Queensland, like the rest of Australia, is in the grip of a housing crisis — with around 22,395 people estimated to be experiencing homelessness in the state alone, and an unmet housing need of some 152,600 dwellings. Older women are disproportionately caught up in this. Many of them aren’t rough sleepers at first – they might be staying with family, house-sitting, or sleeping in their car, and many don’t even realise they are experiencing homelessness.

Growing numbers of older women have devoted crucial earning years to raising families and performing unpaid care work, and now find themselves forced to compete in a tight rental market without adequate savings or even a rental history to their name.

Home service professionals don’t just do jobs—they make lives work. From skilled trades to maintenance, cleaning, and repairs, these roles keep homes safe, functional, and comfortable. It’s work that demands expertise, attention to detail, problem-solving, and dedication—it’s a craft.

Think about it: When a pipe bursts, a lock fails, or a system breaks down, it’s not ‘anyone’ who fixes it—it’s the trained professional who steps in. Their work isn’t just convenient; it’s critical. Society runs on those who take pride in perfecting the details others overlook.

If you’ve ever relied on a home service pro in a moment of need, you know: This isn’t ‘just’ a job. It’s the quiet, indispensable work that holds everyday life together.
